Ukrainian President Volodymr Zelensky has accused Russian forces of “bestial savagery” as he shared a video showing the moment a missile blew up an apartment block in Zaporizhzhia earlier on Wedesday. In the video, a huge explosion can be seen erupting from an apartment block in the southern region, with subsequent footage showing dozens of civilians gathered outside multiple flats on fire.
In a statement on Telegram, Mr Zelensky said: “Zaporizhzhia. Right now, a Russian missile hit a multi-storey building. Russia is shelling the city with bestial savagery.
“Residential areas where ordinary people and children live are being fired at. The terrorist state seeks to destroy our cities, our state, our people.”
He added: “This must not become ‘just another day’ in Ukraine or anywhere else in Europe or the world.
“The world needs greater unity and determination to defeat Russian terror faster and protect lives.”
Emergency services are scrambling to extinguish the resultant fire engulfing the apartment block.
It is not known yet how many have been injured or killed in the attack but images released on Telegram show ambulance workers attending to one man covered in blood. Another appears to show one person seriously wounded. Ukrainian officials have accused Russia of “war crimes”.
The Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration said there was no apparent “military purpose” to the attacks, given they were committed in the middle of the day in a residential area.
In a statement on Telegram, they said: “Two Russian rockets into a residential high-rise building – a strategic target for the troops of the terrorist state.
