The 46th president entered the House chamber to roaring applause as the 80-year-old shook the hands of lawmakers down the aisle. President Biden began his speech by congratulating congressional leaders and cracking a joke by including Kevin McCarthy, the new Republican House speaker who is one of the president’s chief rivals.
He said: “Speaker, I don’t want to ruin your reputation, but I look forward to working with you.”
This is the first time the President is addressing a GOP-controlled House.
He followed this up by paying tribute to outgoing House speaker Nancy Pelosi by dubbing her “someone who I think is going to be considered the greatest Speaker in the history of the House of Representatives”.
This comment received loud cheers from the Democrats and Pelosi even blew the president a kiss from her seat in the chamber.
